buddy basketball

In high school, I interned with the branch of Special Olympics in Durham for almost three years. It was probably one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and I am so glad I got to do it so young! It taught me so much about people…I really can’t imagine what I would be like now had I not had such a neat opportunity at 15.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to go visit Buddy Basketball (which I volunteered at countless times as a teen) which is the younger kids basketball league. Usually there’s a good mix of kids with special needs and their close friends or siblings, and they work on basic basketball skills…but since I’d been gone, they jumped right into playing games! The kids loved it and had a blast…and a major kudos to all the dads that coached…and made sure the kids were shooting in the right hoop. The coordinator, Kristen Randall, has been a long time friend (and boss lady), and asked me to come visit and take some photos. I really cannot explain how sweet it was to be able to give back to an organization that has given me so much. So. Cool. Here’s some sweetness:

The best part of this one, is the two in the foreground are brothers. Big bro would not stop talking smack to lil bro. Lil bro had some basketball skills, too!
The pictures will be given to the kids next weekend at their final game and trophy day.
I wish I could be there to see them!
